Kanazawa, Japan
Visit the Kanazawa Castle, serving as the home of the powerful Maeda Clan from 1583 to 1867.
Although many of the buildings here have burned down over the centuries, a walk through the castle grounds reveals splendid stone walls, the picturesque Gyokuseninmaru Garden and wonderful examples of traditional Japanese carpentry.
After changing hands from the Maeda Clan, the castle was later used as a base for the Japanese army before serving as a campus for Kanazawa University. Since vacated, extensive restoration projects are underway to return the castle grounds to their former glory.
