Hakone Shrine

Updated: Feb 19, 2020

Hakone, Japan

A vibrant red torii gate set along the edge of Ashinoko Lake. Centuries ago, the people of Hakone believed an evil presence was responsible for producing the stream explosions that so often occurred in their mountains (many believed it to be a nine-headed dragon). It is said that a monk exercised the evil spirit and turned it into a protective being, placing it within the Hakone Shrine.
