Ubud

Indonesia

Ubud, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of southern Bali, has for more than a century been the island's preeminent center for fine arts, dance and music. From Ubud and the surrounding villages have come the most famous dancers, the best known painters and the most talented carvers in Bali. An 8th century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers at the Ubud locality of Campuan. It is here that he founded the Gunung Lebah temple on the valley floor which remains the site of a pilgrim destination even today.
