Saigon is the name of a river flowing through the city; this river gave birth to the Saigon - Cho Lon Port and the most buoyant riverside city in Southeast Asia as early as the 18th Century. Today Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam and one of the three biggest municipalities in the country (the others being Hanoi and Haiphong). Although the city is commonly called Ho Chi Minh City, many of its citizens, even officials, still refer to the downtown area as Saigon.
