Sigiriya

Sri Lanka

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress surrounded by gardens, moats, and other structures, as well as approximately 1200 steps, some of which are steep, some spiral and some a combination of rock and metal. Some theories affirm that Sigiriya was a Mahayana Buddhist monastery, while others claim that it was both a citadel and hermitage during different periods of history. The Rock was the Fortress of the "King Kassyapa" who murdered his father and stole the throne from his elder brother, the rightful heir to the throne. Today the fortress is an awe-inspiring example of ancient Sri Lankan Architecture, as well as a window into the country's royal past.
