Myanmar's Shan State

Shan State

Mysterious, rebellious and mountainous, the Shan State is one of the most picturesque settings in Myanmar. At its center shines the serene Inle Lake, while at its remote outskirts reside the intriguing inhabitants of its Palaung, Pa-O, Intha and Shan villages.

A trekkers paradise, the Shan State offers breathtaking hikes around the lake, as well as along the rolling west edge of the Shan Plateau in Kalaw. Once a popular hill station during the days of the British, Kalaw rings with a charming atmosphere reminiscent of the colonial era. It is loosely populated, and emits a peaceful and quiet welcome to those who visit. Explore Aung Chang Tha Zedi and its glittering stupa, or venture to Dhamma Yon for views of the entire town and the ruins of the Hsu Taung Pye Paya.

Witness the state’s centerpiece, Inle Lake, from the privileged perspective of a long tail boat and view community villages and farms perched over the waters on stilts and floating on pads of reeds and earth. Watch the superior skills of the Intha natives, whose fishing techniques will no doubt leave a lasting impression. Upon the lake, watch the ancient technique of leg rowing where one leg remains wrapped around the oar, or admire the delicate floating gardens of the Intha farmers. Visit Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries on the lake, then visit Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the holiest religious site in southern Shan State.
