Myanmar's Bagan Region

Bagan Region

Imagine for a moment all the medieval cathedrals of Europe packed side by side in an area equaling the size of Manhattan island…this only begins to touch on the architectural density of Myanmar’s captivating Bagan Region. With more than 4000 temples upwards of 800 years old in age, Bagan rivals Angkor Wat in ancient architectural supremacy.

With the leadership of King Anawrahta, Began’s first temple, the impressive Shwezigon, was built in 1044, thus beginning a 200 year period of furious building. The result? One of the most spectacular arrays of ornate temples in the world. Nowhere on earth is there a panorama so striking as to peer across the plain of Bagan and the mass of red brick pagodas that carpet the dusty shores of one of the mightiest rivers in Myanmar.

Explore Ku Bauk Gyi, the impressive cave temple teeming with exquisite murals of the Jataka Tales, before heading to Htilominlo, the last Bamar style temple of Bagan. The Tharaba Gateway passes into Old Bagan, where the Pahtothamya Temple and Gawdawpalin Temple await.
