Japan's Western Honshu

Western Honshu

Chugoku, or the western section of Honshu, is the land between the island of Kyushu to the west and Hyogo-ken to the east. It is a land with a distant past and charming allure. Discover the remote wonders of San-in, the northern part of the island, where miles of sand dunes, farmlands, rugged coasts and historically rich towns await. Or, follow the paths of the great trunk roads of feudal times to the breathtaking San-yo, where the gateways to Khikoku and the islands of the Inland Sea only begin your adventures through the numerous cultural, historical and natural gems of southern Chugoku.

It is within this Chugoku Region that one may find the historically tragic Hiroshima, where the Peace Memorial Park reminds visitors of that devastating day, as well as the scenically stunning Miyajima just offshore, where you may visit the majestic seaside shrine of Itsukushima-jinja, famed for its huge red torii emerging from the sea.
