Mahabalipuram
The exquisite 9th century rock cut temples and carvings that warrant this city a UNESCO World Heritage Site are only the artistic surface of the many wonders it holds. Nestled on the Bay of Bengal, Mahabalipuram extends the boulder speckled expanse of the Kanchipuram District, boasting some of India’s finest rock cut caves and monolithic shrines. Its rich collection of structural temples and massive bas-reliefs display Pallava art in all its glory, while the stone carving tradition itself remains alive and well within the workshops that dot the village. The Shore Temple perched on the city’s coastline proudly reflects Mahabalipuram’s maritime history, yet remains remarkably well preserved despite the ravages of time and erosion.
Outside the town center, the Kanchipuram District presents its own unique list of treasures. One of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, Kanichipuram is believed to provide its devoted visitors with eternal happiness. Whether this proves true remains inconsequential, as the rich Tamil history and vibrant collage of art, religion and people found within its limits prove more than anyone could ask.
