The Yangtze Region
Tumbling into the fertile valleys below, the Yangtze River has long nourished the lands and the people of this breathtaking region. The major artery of communication and irrigation, several of China’s great cities have founded their roots on the banks of the Yangtze. This is the cleave that defines the North from South China, and the life source for such treasures as Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjingand the mighty Shanghai.
For centuries, the Yangtze has served not only as nourishment for some of the greatest cities in the world, but also as center around which both life and death revolved. Its rapids have long inspired poets and intimidated oarsmen, while its floods remained feared by everyone. This was the communication link between East and West, and while modern transportation has robbed the river of its former importance, its inherent allure remains.
Along its banks discover some of China’s finest; temples, historic walled towns, and eccentric rock formations along the route from Chongqing to Shanghai, the infamous peak of Huangshan in the Anhui Province, the fish and rice of Jingsu, the charmingly historic provincial capital of Nanjing and the everglittering Shanghai sitting just south of the river’s final plunge into the sea.
