China's The North
Yungang Caves
The majestic caves of Yungang serve both as a premier Chinese showcase of Buddhist art, as well as a revered place of veneration and worship. Under the direction of devout Buddhist artists, an army of some 40,000 workmen carved the caves and statues from sandstone rock. Well protected within the Wuzhou Mountains, the remaining artifacts have survived plunder, weathering and industrial pollution.
Wander through these caves hollowed out between 460 and 494, where many of the artifacts remain impressively well preserved, or simply listen to the serene silence of one the most revered Buddhist sites in the world.
