Bhutan's Thimphu
Thimphu
Motoring the long and winding single access road to the capital, dodging trucks that appear at random around each loop and curve, absorbing the great beauty of the countryside dotted with humble houses, crumbling walls and the occasional white washed temple, few could fully anticipate the great many wonders that are to follow. Take one last glimpse at the paddy fields lining the expressway upon which you’ve suddenly descended, and prepare for a colorful introduction to one of the most intriguing capitals of the world, Thimphu.
Founded in 1961, Thimphu’s striking youthfulness and vibrant exuberance complements nicely with the serene traditions of its hillside neighbors. A capital of a progressive paradigm juxtaposed with the proud tradition and conservative nature of the country it leads, the city’s streets display a curio of complements reflective of its great mixing of ancient and modern.
Monks donned in crimson robes study beside the Indian laborers of the city, and kira clad professionals open the door for wide eyed visitors overwhelmed by the city’s charm. Thimphu rings with a relaxed welcome where no one seems to be in a hurry; a characteristic which seems to be rather helpful when navigating the city's unique traffic light free intersections.
