Bhutan's Western Bhutan

Wangdue Phodrang

The last town on the highway before reaching Central Bhutan, Wangdue Phodrang sits on the top of a picturesque hill, offering phenomenal views of the glorious surroundings. Wangdue Phrodrang boasts an impressive history, for in the 17th century it played a critical role in unifying the Western, Central and Southern regions of Bhutan. Today, Wangdue remains a charming city, small yet rich in everything from history to culture, scenery to architecture, hotels to shops.

While the town itself is a remarkable destination, the road leading to its gates is nearly as breathtaking. Embarking from Trongsa, view landscapes dotted with crystal streams, lush forests and quaint villages, then climb the twists and turns of Pelela Pass along the Black Mountain Range.
