Paro
One of the most populated valleys in the country, as well as one of the most renown, Paro offers a delightful array of highlights, as well as a captivating allure steeped in culture and history. The valley in which it resides is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular in all the country; where willow trees and apple orchards line the roads, whitewashed farmhouses and temples complement the green terraced fields and forested hills rise on either side to create a harmonious landscape for all to enjoy.
Several of Bhutan’s finest treks begin in and around Paro. From the Druk Path, which climbs over the Eastern Valley wall, to the Jhomolhari trek which leads trekkers to the Jhomolhari Base Camp and the glorious alpine regions of Gasa and Laya, Paro is at no shortage for beautiful scenery and a means to explore it.
Visit the Rinpung Dzong, elegant and symmetrical this dzong supervises the religious and secular activities of the valley, or explore the castle shaped Ta Dzong, a watchtower dating to 1651 that was built to defend Bhutan from Tibetan invasions.
